The city is located in Lawrence County, Alabama, and is part of the Decatur Metropolitan Area and the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The city was incorporated in 1819 and finally appeared on the U.S Census roll in 1900. It has a population of more than 4,000 residents and has served as the county seat for Lawrence County starting from 1820. It has been the largest town in the county since the 1920s. In 1819 when Alabama finally became a state, an inn was constructed for migrants that traveled along different paths that crossed the area. Shortly after Alabama became a state, both Courtland and Moulton got incorporated and started competing for the county seat of Lawrence County. But it was awarded to the city by Governor Thomas Bibb due to its central location as it was situated between the two counties. Moulton was named after Lieutenant Micheal Moulton, who was killed while fighting under the command of General Andrew Jackson in 1814 during the Battle of Horse Bend.

The city is home to a radio station called the WALL-LP (97.9 FM). It is a radio station that has been given a license to serve the city. Community Information And Education Radio Inc own it. It once had a program called the American music format, and it carries hits from the 1960s to the 1980s. The letters WALE-LP were assigned to the station by the Federal Communications Commission in 2002. The station is the oldest LPFM station in Alabama. A license was issued to the station to relocate from 93.3FM to 97.9FM in 2017 after a request was made earlier.
