The city is located in Yell County, Arkansas, and has more than five thousand residents. The city is the county seat of Yell County and is located close to Lake Dardanelle. The town is one of the Russellville Micropolitan areas. The city is one of the oldest cities in Arkansas and was incorporated in 1855. The town celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary from when it was settled as a river town. Because of its location on the banks of the Arkansas River, the community became one of Arkansas's leading towns. The area was known as a marketplace for rum, gin, and cotton.

Merritt Park is located in the city in the western part of the town. The Dardanelle Community Center serves the city's residents and provides multiple services to the town. A pontoon bridge was located between Russellville and Dardanelle, then replaced by a ferry service. It was the largest pontoon bridge ever constructed across a moving body of water and was washed away multiple times. The Dardanelle Lock & Dam is one of the McClellan-Kerr Navigation Systems, led by the formation of Lake Dardanelle. The dam helps regulate river traffic and is a source of hydropower for the city.
