McGehee is a city located in Desha County, Arkansas, the city has a beautiful history, and it is joined with that by the railroad that goes through the city. The railroad was opened in 1870 after it was constructed from Pine Bluff to Chicot County through Varner, and the Missouri Pacific Lines was formed by the acquisition of the International-Great Northern and the Gulf Coast Lines. After the arrival of the railroad in the town. Abner McGehee, a member of the initial family, started the construction of a large missionary building and also became a merchant to accommodate the new arrivals. One of the initial buildings in the area was a sawmill, and the product from the mill was used to construct the shotgun-type rented houses. A post office was also established in the community, and the first postmaster was Abner McGehee. It was named McGehee, and it served almost 500 residents.
The Development of the Community
The town was incorporated in 1906, and its first town council meeting was in 1906. While the Second World War was ongoing, the outskirts of the town were the site of an American detention camp, and it was used to house Japanese Americans. The town's economy is largely dependent on agriculture. The railroad has been replaced with the trucking industry, and they move farm products from the area to their destinations; the town has witnessed increased population growth from 1879 to date. The port facilities close to the Mississippi River are being redeveloped, and an expansion is also being carried out on the highway system serving the town.
The School District in charge of the schools in the town is the McGehee School District which has the McGehee High School (grades 7 through 12 and Elementary School (PK through grade 6 and the mascot that represents the school is the Owl.
