No surprise with Mother's Day right around the corner, what's hot is PINK!
Pink Peonies, Pink Roses (especially with the Calla Lillies we mentioned in What's Hot #1)
And now, some background information:
The Rose is a perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species! Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy and usually come in whites, yellows and reds. While most species are native to Asia, some are native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Some rose plants can be as tall as 23 feet!
Historically, Roses have been used in Medicines, Food and Drink and of course, Art.
The Peony is the only genus in the Paeoniaceae family. They are native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America. The story goes that the peony is named after Paeon , a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.
The peony is among the longest-used flowers in Eastern culture. It is a traditional floral symbol of China and is used symbolically in Chinese art. The Chinese Qing Dynasty declared the peony the national flower. However, today the People's Republic of China has no legally designated national flower.
In 1957, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law to make the peony the state flower of Indiana, a title which it holds to this day. It replaced the zinnia, which had been the state flower since 1931.

Here's the first installment of What's Hot!
Calla Lillies

So, legend has it when Hercules was born, Zeus wanted him to have divine powers. He drugged Hera and let the baby Hercules nurse from her. As some of milk fell on the earth they became calla lilies.
They are a tall, sleek and beautiful cup shaped flower. Different flowers have different meaning and the Calla lily meaning is both rebirth and union - perfect for Spring!
Today, we're celebrating the Calla Lily with a sale. Click the link below for more details.

Here at Avas Flowers we like new things. New flowers, new designs, new colors (not to say we don't like the classics too, red roses are always a great choice!)
But, back to "new things." Since I've been here (a whole week already!) I'm going to do my best to get the community involved. I want to hear your feedback. I want you to post on Facebook and Tweet us, +1 us on our Google + page (all the links are on the bottom of this page.)
Today's new thing is a regular blog post called "What's Hot" - each post (about once per week) will talk about, right - you guessed it - what's hot in the world of flowers and plants. We'll vary the topics, and provide new information. In fact, I'll be posting the first one later today.
Hopefully you like this idea. Either way, let us know and we'll continue to listen.
Thanks,

Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day or Admin Day) is an unofficial "holiday" observed (in North America) on the Wednesday of the last full week of April (April 24 in 2013).
Mary Barrett, then president of the former National Secretaries Association, and C. King Woodbridge, then president of Dictaphone Corporation started the idea of the holiday. They served on a council addressing a national shortage of skilled office workers. The account executives at Young & Rubicam originated the idea for a National Secretaries Week.
Originally, "National Secretaries Week," was held June 1–7 in 1952, with Wednesday, June 4, 1952 designated as National Secretaries Day. The first Secretaries Day was sponsored by the National Secretaries Association with the support of corporate groups.
In 1955, the observance was moved to the last full week of April, and in 1981 the name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week. In 2000, another name change - this time to Administrative Professionals Week in order to include the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative support staff.
In the United States, the day is often celebrated by giving one's assistant gifts such as flowers, candy, trinkets, lunch at a restaurant, gift cards, or time off (we like the flowers idea, but we could be biased there.)

Dubbed as the “Bell Flower of Christmas”, Amaryllis is a blooming plant that is closely associated with the holidays. A bulbous plant that has two species, it took it's name after the Greek Shepherdess, Amaryllis. It is best known for its large, bell-shaped flowers that are available in a wide range of hues and shades. The Amaryllis is also commonly referred to as the Hippeastrum, Naked Lad, and Resurrection Lily, although they are only distantly related to the actual lily.

Every year, when the Christmas season comes around, people usually find
themselves soaked with twinkling lights and red and green lushness. The
holidays are pretty uniform this way, especially with the use of
specific flowers as Christmas ornaments. Take the poinsettia, for example. These gorgeous plants are easily one of the best selling florist products during the Yuletide season.
For those who are not very familiar with Christmas plants or flowers, there is actually a good reason for why Poinsettias are found just about everywhere during Christmas time. For one, this time of the year is when Poinsettias actually bloom; around the month of December. And with these plants being completely covered in red and green foliage, Poinsettias are easily associated with this happy holiday season.
