The Doctor had two shops in Connecticut and became the main proprietor of the Kennebec Purchase within the old Plymouth Patent. Silvester proved a tireless promoter for his development and induced a saw millwright, gristmill builder, wheelwright, and house carpenter to settle there.

Some notable sites in the town include Christ Episcopal Church, Edwin Arlington Robinson House, Heritage Museum, Historic District, Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center, Kennebec River, and Laura Richards House. Trade and shipbuilding were the city's primary industries, and ten large riverfront wharves accommodated this. Lumbering, tanneries, and shoe factories prospered in the town.

The entire downtown historic district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in Kennebec County, Maine. Maine School Administrative District serves the communities of Pittson, Gardiner, West Gardiner, and the Randolph communities. The district operates a middle school, five elementary schools, and a high school. The schools in the city include Gardiner Area High School, Regional Middle School, Laura E Richards School, and River View Community School.
