Joseph operated a ferry service on the West Bank of the river and is regarded as the founder of the community, he built the town's first post office, and the town was called Parkinson's Ferry. Adam Wickerman got a part of the land in 1807. George Town became a part of Williamsport, and in 1837, Williamsport was named Monongahela City. The name Monongahela is a Native American word, and it means falling banks and the initial inhabitants of the area where the Monongahela tribe lived in the area before the development of the city.
