It is a borough located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, and it has a population of more than 5,000 residents. The area around is underlain by layers of coking coal, including the Sewickley seam, Waynesburg seam, and Pittsburgh No. 8 seam. The area also has a rich supply of coalbed methane. It was developed from the underlying Marcellus Shale, the largest domestic natural gas reserve, in the early part of the 20th century. A steam shovel factory and four large gas compression stations were located in the borough. The name is derived from General Anthony Wayne, who was one of the most senior lieutenants of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The Pennsylvania General Assembly created legislation creating Greene County and dividing Washington County into two parts, and the lower part is now called Greene County. The ruling led to the choosing of the borough as the county seat of Greene County due to its location in the center of the county. Thomas Slater was the owner of the area now called Waynesburg. Slater was believed to have purchased the land from a Native American. The town was previously referred to as Eden. The name was derived from his wife's maiden name. The county commissioners purchased land to develop basic amenities such as a courthouse, jail, and other public facilities. The commissioners later changed the name of the community after the Revolutionary War in honor of General Anthony Wayne. A railroad was built through the town named the Waynesburg and Washington Railroad, but it was later renamed the Waynesburg Secondary Railroad. The railroad has stopped its regular freight service since 1976, but it is still used occasionally to access coal mines.
