These barons were the owners of the Berwind Corporation, they changed the order of the syllables in the family name "Berwind" and thus Windber was named.

Berwind-White Coal Mining Company operated in the area and obtained workers from southern and eastern Europe. The company exploited ethnic divisions in the area settled by Irish and Germans. The coal miners walked out of the mines in the area and neighboring locations in Somerset County. They forced the mine owners to recognize their union and accurately weigh the coal they mined. The Vintage Electric Streetcar Company is located in the borough and is known as the "trolley graveyard".
