The city is located in and is the county seat of Page County. It is in the Shenandoah Valley in the northern part of the commonwealth and has more than five thousand residents. It was named after William Staige Marye, a descendant of a family native to Luray, France. The town is about ninety miles away from Washington and forty-five miles away from Winchester. The Courier and Page News is the major newspaper in the city, and Blue Ridge Bank is the oldest functioning in Virginia. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is close to Luray and provides recreational activities, including white water rafting, boating, hunting, and fishing in the fall. The Belle Brown Northcott Memorial is the Luray Singing Tower and was built in honor of Colonel Theodore Clay Northcott's wife. Northcott is the owner of the Luray Caverns, and the singing tower was constructed by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough, Leicestershire in Great Britain.
